This auction is for (6) Young Adult Tank Bred and Raised C. Melanotaenia with Live Arrival Guaranteed (L.A.G.) and Free Shipping. The winning bidder will also be sent (2) bonus fish. Details of the L.A.G. can be found in the shipping details. Discounts are offered for multiple purchases.
These friendly tank cleaners are born and raised in neutral pH water (7.0-7.2), with KH (3) and GH (5). While they will tolerate temperatures as low as 62 F. and as high as 80 F. they're more comfortable in the water under 78 F. Corys will thrive in any type of setting whether it be a bare tank or fully planted, as long as the substrate is not a sharp edged sand or gravel. Since they spend most of their time mouthing the bottom and rooting around in it when there is a substrate, their barbels, or whiskers, can be worn down by sharp substrates and this can be fatal. So sand and gravel are fine as long as they're not sharp. They are also a gregarious lot and do best in groups of at least (5) or more.
For people interested in breeding this is a good starter species. Mature adult C. Melanotaenia typically respond to live foods and slightly cooler water changes by laying eggs everywhere. The fry are very hardy and extremely easy to rear, compared to most tropical egg laying species. Corys in general make wonderful tank mates in a community setting and thrive on finishing up what other sloppy eaters miss. We keep ours with other catfish, angels, sword tails, mollies, guppies, tetras, barbs, loaches, gold fish, koi...well suffice it to say, we haven't found much that they can't live with. The only reservation here would obviously be large cichlids or other catfish that could swallow them whole.
In the wild this variety is found in parts of South America, and grow to about 2" in length. While they are well adapted to bare bottom breeder tanks they thrive in an environment that provides them with some hidy holes or over hangs, vegetation and a smooth sandy bottom. In captivity the females can grow as large as 2 3/4", but are usually more in the 2 1/2" range, with the males being a 1/4" - 1/2" smaller. Corys are a fairly long lived species and remain productive spawners for many years under proper conditions. |
